A Brief Intro to Architectural Louvres

You may have heard the term Louvre (spelt Louvers in the US) used in architectural terms, but may not fully understand what they are and why people are talking about them. First things first, they’re not talking about an architecture exhibition at the famous museum in Paris. (Just thought I’d make that clear).

The Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA), partly responsible for creating the European industry standard louvre test method, defines a louvre as:

“… a passive device, intended to allow the passage of air into or out of a building or ventilation system, while restricting the entry of rain”

This essentially sums a louvre up, they’re not generally moveable (although controllable louvres do exist) they are mostly there, as a fixed blade device, to provide airflow into (air inlet) and out of (exhaust) to whatever is behind them whilst protecting them from rain penetration.

Louvres have a diverse range of uses for both engineers and building designers.

  • Aesthetically, louvres allow designers to hide (screen) unsightly machinery or create a feature on an external elevation.
  • Functionally, louvres offer essential airflow and rain defence to plant machinery and building equipment.

As well as providing natural ventilation, an efficient louvre system can improve airflow to building systems, which means less power is needed to move the volumes of air required. In the cases of HVAC systems, this improvement in energy efficiency can sometimes mean a smaller and less powerful system is required for space heating and cooling.

Types of Louvre:
Rain Defence Louvres

Rain Defence Louvres

Rain Defence louvres are designed to stop wind-driven rain entering a building, whilst still allowing efficient passage of air for natural ventilation.
Screening Louvres

Screening Louvres

Our simple screening louvres help to hide unsightly equipment whilst providing essential airflow to plant and HVAC machinery. Often used at the top of buildings.
Acoustic Louvres

Acoustic Louvres

Acoustic louvres reduce noise pollution from plant rooms and air handling systems, whilst providing essential intake or exhaust airflow to equipment behind.
Ventilation Louvres

Ventilation Louvres

Ventilation louvres offering good airflow with some rain defence, for use in areas where occasional water ingress is not a major concern. Tested to AS/NZS 4740:2000 (R2016)

CS have been manufacturing and selling louvres globally for over 60 years and were the first in the industry to design and create an extruded aluminium louvre. The performance of our louvre systems has been evaluated by independent third party testing. In addition, any of our standard or bespoke solutions can be verified in our own testing chamber to ensure they achieve specified performance levels in real world conditions.

Whatever your building’s ventilation, screening or weather protection requirements, we have a louvre system to meet your needs.
